Horizontal Output
Why is it not possible to use a set of beveled gears to convert a vertical shaft engine to a horizontal one?
I would like to use a lawn mower engine to make a go kart, but of course it uses a vertical shaft. Why cannot I just convert it to a horizontal output using gears at a 45 degree angle? (like this: http://pustaka.ictsleman.net/how/g/gear/gear-bevel.jpg) It seems possible to me, but I have not seen this solution mentioned anywhere else, so there must be a problem with it. Thanks a ton.
Many riding lawn mowers and tractors use a vertical shaft engine. Go to Wal-Mart and check one over to see how the power is transferred. I think years ago it was done with a belt, like on the fan on a Corvair.
