Poly Vinyl
how do i start this problem?
In a study designed to prepare new gasoline-resistant coatings, a polymer chemist dissolves 6.085 g poly(vinyl alcohol) in enough water to make 100.0 of mL solution. At 25°C, the osmotic pressure of this solution is 0.257 atm. What is the molar mass of the polymer sample?
Osmotic pressure=MRT
T=temprature in Kelvin
R= gas law constant ( 0.0821 atm/mol )
and M = molarity
273+25C=298K
so now we have:
0.257 = M*0.0821*298
solve for M and you get: M= 0.0105045 moles/liter
0.0105045 * 0.1= .00105045 (becauce we only have 100ml)
this means that 6.085g was only 0.0105045 moles
so then we do 6.085/0.0010545= 5770 as the molar mass
Hope that helps
